Welcome to the ECA GIG-YC

The ECA GIG-YC is a group created to represent the interests of European Young Crystallographers within the overall association. This group acts as a forum for discussion, a conduit for communication with the ECA committee/SIGs and a source of scientific sessions at international meetings.

5th Nancy Crystallographic School

A fifth version of the Nancy Crystallographic School is being organised this summer. The title of the school is “Structural analysis using single-crystal X-ray Diffraction and crystal engineering applications” and it is being held in the Abbaye des Prémontrés (Pont à Mousson, France) from 2 to 6 July 2012. This provides a very good grounding in the theory and application of single crystal x-ray diffraction. Please take a look at the school website:

International Henry Moseley School and Workshop on X-ray Science

A 10-day international school on x-ray sciences is being held in Turkey this summer (14-23 June 2012). The school will be covering the principles and advances of x-ray scattering/diffraction, protein and molecular crystallography, x-ray absorption and fluorescense spectroscopy, x-ray imaging and tomography, nuclear resonance scattering, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, ultra fast applications in the nano and fempto regimes. The organisers are hoping to receive applications from students from many countries, so please take a look at this link and get in touch with the organisers if you are interested:

3rd Granada International School of Crystallization

The Laboratory of Crystallographic Studies announces that the 3rd Granada International School of Crystallization will be held in Granada starting Monday 21st to Friday 25th of May 2012. ISC Granada 2012 will focus on the fundamentals of crystallization from solutions. The School is intended for postgraduate and postdoctoral students as well as for research scientists from industry and academy. Students from all over the world are welcome. The language of the school will be English. For details, see:

Swiss Crystallography Meeting (100 Years of Diffraction)

The Annual Meeting of Swiss Society of Crystallography will be held this year in Zurich, Switzerland from 20th-22nd June. To celebrate 100 Years of Diffraction, the conference is going to be held in conjuntion with the Annual Meeting of the Swiss Physical Society. There will also be a joint plenary lecture (Dieter Schwarzenbach) and a two-hour microsymposium on the history of crystallography.

Abstracts for the meeting should be submitted before March 15, 2012.

Chemistry Conference for Young Scientists

The youth division of the Royal Flemish Society of Chemistry (Jong-KVCV) together with its sponsors, is organising the “Chemisty Conference for Young Scientists” (ChemCYS 2012) to be held in Blankenberge, Belgium from 1-2 March 2012. For details, see: http://chemcys.kvcv.be/.

Travel Support for Younger Swiss Crystallographers

The Swiss Society for Crystallographers is now supporting young members to participate in international conferences. For more details and the conditions, see the following link: http://www.sgk-sscr.ch/TravelGrants.pdf

ECA GIG-YC Meeting 23rd August 2011

We’d like to announce that a formal meeting of the ECA Young Crystallographers GIG (GIG1) will be taking place at the IUCr in Madrid. The meeting will be held on Tuesday the 23rd August 2011 from 19:30 – 21:30 in room Paris at the conference centre (Municipal Conference Centre, Madrid). We are also hoping to arrange an informal mixer event at the IUCr congress – keep an eye out for more information on this.

IUCr 2011 – Workshop for Young Researchers

Current Research on Molecular Structures and Chemical Properties – A Young Perspective (Monday 22nd August 2011)

This workshop, proposed by the ECA SIG 13 with help from the GIG 1  and supported by the IUCr Commission of Structural Chemistry is aimed to encourage the exchange of current experiences between different groups working in this area.

Young researchers are invited to give short talks (~ 20 min) to explain to the other participants the main objectives of the research carried out in their groups and on the specific research they are personally involved in. It is hoped that the meeting will stimulate discussion and the establishment of future collaboration between groups, perhaps within the framework of international funding systems.

IUCr 2011 – Crystallographic Computing School

Oviedo, Spain- Crystallographic Computing School (Tuesday 16th August to Monday 22nd August 2011)

The IUCr 2011 Crystallographic Computing School invites the world-wide crystallographic community (including macro- and small-molecule crystallography, powder diffraction, and small-angle scattering) to an intensive session of working together and learning from each other.

With help from our sponsors, we have achieved a registration cost from 495 euros to 545 euros (including accommodation and meals). A limited number of bursaries will be available for students attending the School. The bursary application deadline is June 3rd and the registration deadline is June 30th, 2011.

GIG-YC Membership

To join the GIG-YC group you must be an individual member of the ECA. For registration please go to the ECA membership registration page.
